Watford MP Dean Russell joined local charity One Vision for their Black History Month award ceremony.
Black History Month UK began in October 1987 by Akyaaba Sebo. Akyaaba was a special projects co-ordinator of the Ethnic Minorities Unit at the then Great London Council. The theme for Black History Month 2022 is ‘Time for Change, Action not Words.’
The purpose of this theme is not just to educate people on Black History but inform and empower people to be true allies in the anti-racism movement.
This national celebration aims to promote and celebrate the contributions of those with African and Caribbean heritage to British society and to foster an understanding of Black history in general. It also provides an opportunity to learn more about their contribution to the British economy, culture, and history.
Following the event Dean said “I was delighted to be invited to present awards to outstanding individuals who are role models to people not just in Watford, but also further afield. It was wonderful to spend time with the nominees and learn more about how and why they were nominated.”
