Local MP Dean Russell visited the ASDA superstore in Watford to learn more about their work with FareShare.
In 2013, Asda entered into an innovative partnership with its fresh food suppliers and FareShare, to ensure surplus food benefits charities and community projects across the UK, instead of going to waste and being disposed of.
Asda partners with FareShare through a back of store donation scheme, which in 2021 saw stores, depots and Asda’s home office donate enough surplus food to make the equivalent of 6.6 million meals and is part of the supermarket’s commitment to reduce food waste by 50% by 2030.
During his visit Dean also learnt about the store’s ‘quiet hour’ which takes place as 2pm every Monday to Thursday. During this time they reduce the noise levels in store for people who may struggle with bright lights & loud noises.
Speaking outside the store Dean said “ASDA plays a very important role in our local community. From offering their community rooms, partnering with FareShare to offering quiet times in-store, ASDA helps countless local groups, schools and charities. It was great to meet the staff today, and I would like to thank ASDA for inviting me.”
