Dean Russell MP launched a campaign shortly after his election, aiming to train 1000 people with mental health first aid awareness. This initiative received tremendous support from local individuals, as well as the local Chamber of Commerce, generously funded by Camelot.
He met with BBC 3 Counties Radio alongside two mental health first aiders at Camelot to celebrate reaching the significant milestone of 1000 trained first aiders in mental health awareness across Watford. They discussed the impact of this achievement and its significance to them.
He emphasised the importance of mental health support for businesses and how it directly contributes to enhanced productivity. He highlighted how becoming trained in mental health awareness has played a crucial role in breaking down the stigma associated with mental health in the workplace. Beyond listening to individual stories, it involves creating events like workshops to promote general well-being. Additionally, the campaign extends to providing managers with training, enabling them to integrate mental health awareness into their day to day support to their employees.
Looking ahead, Dean expressed his commitment to gathering input from residents through a survey to better understand their perspectives on mental health and what they envisage for the future of mental health support in the community.
Dean extended his appreciation to Chris Luff and the Chamber of Commerce for their unwavering support throughout the campaign.
During the meeting, two Camelot employees who are trained in mental health first aid awareness shared their personal motivations for undertaking this initiative, including their own experiences with mental health within their families. Their stories underscored the importance of fostering a community that prioritises mental health awareness and support.
Dean Russell MP commented, "Training 1000 people with mental health first aid awareness in Watford has been incredible, and I am truly grateful for the immense support we've received from the community and our partners. Mental health awareness is vital, not only for businesses but for our entire community. Let's keep working together to ensure that everyone feels supported and valued when it comes to mental health."
