One Vision organised a poignant event to mark the 75th Anniversary of the Windrush generation.
The Windrush Generation and their descendants played a key role shaping British culture and identity, and events such as this are so important to mark their contribution. These men and women came to the UK, built their lives here and enriched our communities. To put it simply, members of the Windrush Generation made the United Kingdom a more successful place and are rightly a central part of our great national story.
The event was attended by a number of distinguished guests including the High Sheriff, Cliff Walker MBE JP DL and the wider community. I gave a speech where I referenced the very powerful personal stories which were shared on the night and how important community events like this reinforce the importance of us working together. It is so important that we learn lessons from history and come together as a country to ensure mistakes like this never happen again.
It was good to see and chat to the local police and fire service who were in attendance, demonstrating their ongoing support to the community. The event reinforced the crucial role of community engagement by bringing together individuals and organisations.
Following the event Dean said, 'I would like to put on record my sincere thanks to One Vision for organising such a special and important community event. The speeches were very moving, and helped us to reflect on the important contribution the Windrush Generation made to our culture and identity'.
