Watford MP Dean Russell joined members of the local community at St Luke’s Church to mark the World Day of Prayer.
The World Day of Prayer is traditionally celebrated on the first Friday of March annually in more than 70 countries, and the service has a special annual theme which is developed by women of a different country each year. This year’s event has been prepared by Christian women in Taiwan. Their theme "I have heard about your faith" is one of encouragement for those facing suffering and injustice.
The origins of World Day of Prayer date back to the 19th century when Christian women in the USA and Canada initiated a variety of cooperative activities in support of women’s involvement in mission, at home and abroad. It is from such roots as these that World Day of Prayer has taken its present shape –a worldwide ecumenical movement of Prayerful Action.
Dean Russell said
“It was an honour to be invited to attend Watford’s World Day of Prayer service. It is fantastic that people all over the world join services local to them to participate in communal prayer and to get a better understanding of how other countries, languages and cultures understand biblical passages.”
