Dean Russell hosted the Medical Technology Group’s annual Medical Technology Awareness Week Reception in Parliament.
The MTG is the only UK coalition of patient groups, research charities and medical device companies working together to improve access to cost effective medical technologies for everyone who needs them. It uses Medical Technology Awareness Week as an opportunity to raise awareness of the value of medical technology for patients, the NHS and society as a whole.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the founding of the MTG and this event was an opportunity for them to launch their new manifesto ‘MedTech the Solution’ to mark this occasion. The manifesto looks back over how medical technology has been used to transformed patient care and identifies four main barriers that are stopping patients from accessing innovative technologies, which included: poor awareness and lack of patient engagement, funding barriers to proven technologies, poor uptake of new technologies and a silo mentality within the NHS.
After hosting the event, Dean said: “I was pleased to have the opportunity to host this important event and meet a variety of guests from the medical industry. I passionately believe that a better use of technology is fundamental to improving the quality of healthcare in the UK and this is something that I have emphasised on multiple occasions during sessions of the Health and Social Care Committee, and also through my work as Chair of the Digital Health APPG.
